Miller’s Natural Market

Once a month my Mom and I take a trip to Bird-in-Hand, PA to do our monthly grocery shopping. Miller’s Natural Foods is always the primary stop.

To the passer-by you could almost miss this lovely Amish-owned natural food store. With no bright or flashing colors to catch your eye, and a store front about a quarter mile from the main road, unless you know where you are going you might never even know it existed.

As you drive down Monterey Road you’ll see a sign out at the end of Miller Lane; “Miller’s Natural Foods” and a notice section where they list store specials or upcoming dates to note. You’ll pass through a working farm on your way to the parking lot and depending on the season you will see an abundance of various produce and even chickens and cows being rotated around. As you pull in to park you’ll note the few spots designated for horse and buggy; Make sure not to block those please.

As you enter the store you will see it is set up exactly like a grocery store, with signs above each aisle notifying you of what items you can find where. The refrigerated and frozen section is a large walk-in room packed full of items ranging from produce to dairy to dried fruits to grains, nuts and seeds.

There is an extensive variety of goods carried and a lot of the items are from local farms and family businesses. If you can think of it, there is a pretty good chance Miller’s has it; and let’s not forget to mention prices. When it comes to natural food stores, they usually have a reputation for being very pricey. Not Miller’s. I am always surprised at how reasonable the prices are. Also, to make things even more affordable, if you buy things in bulk they give you even more of a discount.

As a side note, about 2 years ago I placed a very large bulk order and stocked up on grains and items to store long-term. I’m curious if my name is still hanging up on the wall as the customer who has made the largest purchase. If you think I’m joking…

I digress!

Another thing you will notice is the lack of electric lighting. The ceiling has skylights strategically located throughout the store so as to utilize the natural light, and as a back-up there are also gas lights scattered throughout the store.

Hopefully reading this will give you all the information you need to go check Miller’s out. You’ll be glad you went.
