How we raise our animals

Marge, our livestock guardian dog.

We raise all of our animals either out on pasture or in our woods. Our cattle and sheep are exclusively grass-fed & finished. We supplement hay during the winter months when forage is covered in snow but otherwise they are regularly moved around our pastures in a strategic manner in which supports the animal, the soil, the grasses and the wildlife around (this practice is called Adaptive Grazing). Our pigs and poultry all require some grains to keep them in optimal body condition but all the grains fed here on our farm are local and tested chemical-free, and free from GMOs, soy & corn.

I have done an extensive amount of research on raising livestock on pasture and I have amazing mentors who I am learning from daily. Raising livestock in an adaptive grazing style Is hard, it’s time consuming, it’s expensive, it takes daily work rotating livestock, moving fencing and water, and I do it mostly by myself and with the occasional help of my sweet children. BUT I am SO confident in what I am doing, that it is the best and only way livestock should be raised and it certainly rolls over onto the quality and flavor of the meats. I also choose specific breeds for their ability to forage well and be resistant to disease and are known to have exceptionally flavorful meat. Not to mention the benefits that adaptive style grazing has on the wildlife and the soil.
